Vape Coils and Batteries: How to Tell When to Replace Them

2 min read

Most problems customers bring to our McMurray counter come down to two things: a worn-out coil or a battery that needs attention. Here's how to tell, and what to do about it.

Signs your coil needs replacing

  • Burnt or harsh taste, even with a full tank

  • Muted flavor compared with a fresh coil

  • Gurgling or spitting that doesn't clear up

  • Dark, gunky cotton visible through the coil's wicking holes

How long a coil lasts depends on the e-liquid, wattage and how much you vape. Sweeter liquids tend to wear coils faster.

How to prime a new coil

  • Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton.

  • Install the coil, fill the tank and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Start at the low end of the coil's recommended wattage and work up.

Skipping this step is the most common cause of a burnt taste on a brand-new coil.

Matching the coil to your tank

Coils aren't interchangeable between brands or even between tanks from the same brand. Bring your tank or pod in and we'll match the right replacement. We stock coils, pods, batteries and chargers; see our Hardware page.

Battery safety basics

  • Use the charger made for your device, or a quality external charger for removable batteries.

  • Don't carry loose batteries in a pocket with keys or coins. Use a battery case.

  • Replace batteries with torn wraps or dents.

  • Don't leave devices charging unattended or overnight.

  • Keep devices out of hot cars.
